In 1920 Rutherford predicted the existence of neutral particle in an atom. In 1932 James Chadwick bombarded alpha particles on the nucleus of beryllium. It produced neutral particles having mass equal to proton and carry no charge. These particles were named as neutrons.
Nuclear Reaction: 4Be9 +2He4 → 6C12 + 0n1.
PROPERTIES OF NEUTRON: The most important properties of neutron are as follow:
- Neutrons carry no charge that is they are neutral particles.
- They are highly penetrating.
- Neutrons have mass equal to proton.
- These are present inside the nucleus of an atom.
